The Malayan peacock pheasant (Polyplectron malacense), also known as crested peacock pheasant or Malaysian peacock pheasant, is a medium-sized pheasant with a short tail. Although the body is a dull brown in colour, the plumage is a striking mix of small black spots and iridescent blue-green eyespots (known as ocelli) on the back and upper wings, topped with a dark blue-green crest on the forehead.
It is a shy and elusive bird found in lowland regions, and its population is now restricted to areas within and connected to the Central Forest Spine of Malaysia. It is by nature sedentary and fairly territorial, staying close to their hatching area. Due to consistent loss of habitat, the Malayan peacock pheasant has been classified as Vulnerable in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
It is omnivorous with a diet consisting mainly of insects. They usually live in small groups known as musters, with several females and a single male for breeding. As with many bird species, the male is much more attractive than the female.
